My Story

I took on the St Thomas' Abseil on 21 September in support of the incredible NHS staff at Guy's and St Thomas', and the exceptional healthcare they provide.

The abseil was way outside my comfort zone - when I've pushed myself in the past, I've picked cycling and walking for personal exploits, and avoided going above or below ground!

But I took on this challenge to acknowledge the wonderful attention and treatment that I've received at Guy's and St Thomas' and to fundraise in support of the NHS staff who saved my life and kept me well over many years.

Reasons to be grateful:

• In 2004 Guy's urology team operated on me for an aggressive bladder tumour. Ten years of checkups later I was told I was cured, but learnt that I'd originally been given a 10% chance of living 5 years.
• St Thomas' Eye Department has managed my glaucoma for 25 years, slowing its progress with surgery, medication and regular monitoring.
• The clinical haematology team at Guy's picked up on the alertness of my GP 4 years ago and now monitor me routinely for a diagnosis of smouldering myeloma.

Their outstanding healthcare gave me the chance, and the incentive, to stand successfully for election as a local councillor. Without this care and attention I would have been unable serve those 16 years in one of the finest jobs a person can have.

By sponsoring me to do the St Thomas' Abseil,
you are raising funds that will go towards lifesaving, innovative treatment and crucial staff wellbeing support.

You are helping to:

• Fund ground-breaking new research into treating Long COVID
• Improve rest areas so dedicated staff can properly recharge during long shifts.
• Help pay for one-to-one counselling for staff coping with the demands of working in a busy, high-pressured environment.

Thank you for your support - and in advance for any further donations that are made!
